What are skin boosters? The injectable treatment that targets deep hydration (2024)

Note: The following is intended as general information only. Please seek advice from an experienced treatment provider on the suitability of any treatment for your skin and health.

Smooth, plump and hydrated skin that glows with good health is the aim for many people, but achieving it can involve a number of different approaches. A needle isn’t usually one of them.

Of course, there are many things that contribute to skin’s condition and appearance. These can include genetics, skin-nourishing nutrition, managing environmental challenges like sun exposure and seasonal weather changes, and a consistent skincare routine.

Skin also changes naturally as we age, with a significant reduction in elasticity and collagen, as well as diminishing ability to hold on to moisture.

For addressing fine lines and wrinkles, we have proven skincare ingredients like Retinol. Anti-wrinkle injections from experienced providers have also changed the game for what’s possible in minimising the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet or frown lines. These treatments temporarily reduce the action of targeted facial muscles, preventing them from moving. As a result, lines and wrinkles in the skin are softened.

Injectable ‘fillers,’ made of hyaluronic acid (HA) in a variety of densities, offer a way to add volume in specific areas of the face, for plumping and contouring.

But until now, we haven’t had an injectable treatment that aims to help improve overall skin condition, improving hydration in the deeper layers of skin.

How are skin boosters different from traditional fillers?

Skin boosters are a new wave of injectable hyaluronic acid treatments that aim to help smooth skin’s texture and help it hold on to moisture from beneath its surface.

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating and moisture-holding component that occurs naturally in the body, but those natural stores decrease over time. Hyaluronic acid is one of the main components that gives skin structure, and is responsible for that plump and hydrated look. According to the Journal of the American Academy Of Dermatology, skin’s HA content starts to decrease as early as twenty years of age, and is reduced to half by the age of fifty.

Unlike HA injectables often called ‘fillers’ that are used to add targeted volume and fullness in the lips or cheeks, skin boosters are thinner, with a runnier consistency. Delivered via injectable by an experienced provider, they distribute evenly over a larger area beneath the surface of skin. This helps retain moisture for longer and promote a rejuvenated, healthy glow from the inside out.

There are a number of different skin booster brands available, each unique in composition and with slightly different approved benefits. However the common goals are deep hydration and helping improving skin’s overall quality, in turn delivering a smoother, firmer appearance and slightly softening superficial lines.

Part of the appeal is that these treatments reach layers of the skin that topical skincare, such s moisturiser and serum, is generally not able to.

Who may benefit from a skin booster treatment?

You may be a good candidate for this type of treatment if you have dry, crepey skin, are looking to improve skin’s elasticity, or want to help smooth and soften your skin.

Rather than localised ‘spot treatment,’ the intended results aim to give a more overall improvement and revitalisation, hydrating the skin from within for a more healthy, radiant glow.

Some skin booster products aim to improve the early signs of sun damage and redness.

What happens over time?

If you’re looking for a more natural-looking enhancement, skin boosters may be a good choice. Results are progressive which means that changes in skin condition are subtle and help support skin and improve its appearance over a number of months, depending on the brand used.

It means the before and after’s wont be as dramatic, but a revitalised appearance to skin is said to last well.

Like other fillers, over time the body naturally metabolises the HA material that has been injected.

Things to consider

Results may vary from person to person as everyone’s skin structure is different. The longevity of skin boosters varies, depending on the type of product used and individual factors.

Like any injectable treatment there are associated risks, side effects and considerations that should be clearly discussed with you prior to a skin booster treatment.

Your treatment provider should take into account your medical history. For example, treatment is not suitable for those that are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are on certain medications.
