View Full Version : Who else has a car problem (4+)? Post up your fleet :)

I'm getting ready to move, and planning logistics on getting the fleet across country. I love our four cars and have no plans to get rid of any of them, but I thought I'd post up and see who else has a multiplicity of vehicles.
The blow-by-blow on each:
- 2000 Miata - My first real car, drove it through college and am still keeping it. At 218k, it isn't worth much, and I have no plans of being Miata-less at any point in the future.
- 2000 Corolla - Daily driver/OTM. Free and 35mpg is hard to turn down (got it from my Mom when she upgraded to a 2012 model.) It's kept many miles off the Miata and has kept me from the engine/tranny rebuild which will eventually face me. Will be replaced eventually with a Mazda6.
- 1977 Ford F-100 - I've been looking for a vintage truck for a while, and with the encouragement of the wife, snagged it a couple years ago. It's in great shape and it looks like we will be keeping it at my wife's family farm to decrease the vehicle count in our driveway.
- 2013 Wrangler JKU - The wife's ride, comes in handy in snow driving in Wyoming.
Who else has a full garage/driveway? Post up what you have!

the engine/tranny rebuild which will eventually face me.
On the Miata? Negative. It will never need an engine rebuild. :) They run forever! Sounds like a very cool fleet.
My fleet so far:
1995 Land Cruiser - recently bought the cleanest one I could find. It's a keeper. Absolute beast--luxury tank. Good for zombie apocalypse.
1990 Red Miata! Picking it up from Arkansas next week. Rust free Texas car. Replaces my rusty 2002.
1994 Ranger V6 extended cab auto. Turquoise colored :( very clean do-it -all vehicle. Just picked it up for $1250. Was owned by an old man in California who passed away. **I want to replace it with a 5 speed, regular cab in a diff color. But every man should have a Ranger :D
PENDING: ;) Corvette C5
PENDING: 1960s Chevy pickup
PENDING: Fiat ABARTH
PENDING: Jeep TJ
I also suffer from "fleet" disorder :dunno: Doctors tell me it's incurable

Very nice. The Ranger is a great truck. My mom has a '04, 2wd manual with the Edge package. It's been put to use in the family for everything from hauling 1500 lbs of cinder block and concrete, to towing 3k lbs cross country, to flat towing a CJ-7 through the mountains from Flagstaff to Phoenix. 4wd would have been nice, but if does fine with 2wd. And the manual is great for heavy hauling duty, if you find a nice one I'd go for it. But I'm sure the auto works great too.
A lot of folks diss the Ranger, but for occasional hauling duty, it can't be beat for the value.
And it should be a good change from the rusty NB to a nicer NA, you'll definately get a more original Miata experience.

LOL! It was a replacement for a '99 Taurus (they didn't need two sedans), and it was long overdue. Seems like we were needing a truck every few months at a minimum for hauling something around. It gets about 7k/yr, shuttled between my siblings in the valley and up in Flagstaff. It will likely be in our family for years to come.

I don't have a car problem yet, but I sure would like to. My current plan is to put the life-boss into a 2005-2008 TSX and then put a little away for a resto-mod project (perhaps a G-body GN-clone with an LS2 powerplant and a T56 or T6060). Or, perhaps down the road, a Sigma II CTS-V (if I really want to dream big).

You are missing in the 1xx HP bracket :)
Come to think of it, we have one of each of the common gear numbers in a transmission:
3 speed (F-100)
4 speed (Corolla)
5 speed (Miata)
6 speed (Jeep)
If we get a Mazda6 6sp manual, that'll break up our perfect match!

And what's your reasoning for a TJ? There are a lot of models, all with their pro's and con's. I am somewhat familiar with the CJ-7, sister owns one, and our JK. But that leaves a lot of room in the middle that I don't know a whole lot about.

I'm only in the early stages of the JEEP disease (mild tremors, night sweats ;)) so I am still researching. 1) I love the way it looks 2) It's old but not too old 3) I want to spend less than 10k for one in very nice condition 4) I love the way it looks  5) I want another "winter" vehicle besides my Land Cruiser because (like you do by using the corolla instead of your Miata) I want to keep the miles down. I believe the 1995 LC is (or will be) a classic.

Just like Miatas, all older Jeeps are "heavily modified" ... it's just how they are after being owned for years. I wouldn't expect to pay top dollar just because of the mods.
Also, I wouldn't expect to find one that's been babied ... they are Jeeps after all. However, I would be looking underneath for signs of abuse, like bent metal underneath.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll find garage kept, only driven on weekend Jeeps as much as there are Miatas. They have more practicality than Miatas, and tend to get driven more. And they hold their value better, as I mentioned earlier.
Even more than with a Miata, I would recommend trying to find one with a hard top. They're not that hard to remove, and make top up driving sooooo much nicer! For summertime driving, you can just throw up a bikini top if you don't want the hassle of taking off the hard top and then installing the soft top.

Hold out for a stock Jeep. They do come up for sale sometimes, and are usually the same price if not more than a lifted one but are also usually owned by old people who RV so are not beat on. There are way to many cheaply lifted Jeep around, a lift is something you get what you pay for. Just a word of warning the Dana 35 rear axle is only good for up to 33" tires and even then it is somewhat questionable and the stock tailgate spare tire mount and big tires do not play well together. The weight from the tire will either crack or warp the tail gate over time.
There are basically 6 categories of Jeeps.
1) Stock. Either low mileage well taken care of, or high mileage beater.
2) Just want the look. You get the body lift and spring spacers with some cool wheels then you drive it around on the streets because you like the look. It looks nice to someone who does not know about lifts but drive like crap. Think of it as the equivalent of cut springs and hard parking in the tuner world.
3) Cheap and beat. Same as above with the body lift and spring spacers, but because it was cheap it is disposable. "Hold my beer and watch this."
4) Well built and not used. Quality lift kits done right and never seen dirt, kind of like a show car but is usually still daily driven.
5) Well built and used. Quality suspension, may have skid plates and body armor, but the stuff was put on there to actually use it so this Jeep has been off road more than once and may have some battle scars. Think of it as the autocross/weekend track day/nice weather Miata, they did the research and put the right parts on it and do care for the vehicle but use it for what it is built for.
6) Complete wheeler. Nice lift kit, body armor, skid plate, maybe even an aftermarket roll cage. They used quality parts because they plan on putting them to the test. This Jeep has been dragged over a few rocks, buried in mud more than once and may have even been upside down or on is side at one point in time. The equivalent would be a spec Miata where it is well built but rubbing is racing.
I would recommend buying them in the order of 1, 4, 5, 2, 6, 3, if you plan to use it as a vehicle.

Good writeup. Spacer lifts are a no go for true performance. And I didn't think about the RV dinghy crowd, good catch.

Haha, nice. It's hard to argue the practicality of a minivan! Definitely a size promotion not performance!

That 13 Jeep is the long one, right? We did it with my old 80 series land cruiser, and the Audi for our first one. putting him in the center of the baby seat in the Audi was a back breaking job for the both of us as he got bigger, but not big enough to go in there by himself. Pick up 20 lbs with your ass up in the air trying to reach the middle of the back seat while trying not ding the car's door next to you with spaces designed for motorcycles. When we learned of the 2nd baby coming, we got rid of the outback (this was after the Audi) and went straight to the mini van. I will give up my man card here in secret but don't tell the other guys here. I / we actually like the mini van a lot.

The 80s are known to be the best LC in imported to the US. Who the heck design their vehicle with two (2 in case of the first breaks) alta. belt so it will get you home. I had two of those, the first one I simply couldn't break out in the desert. Finally, I smashed the driveshaft. My second, a young lady in her BMW (using her cell phone) tried to go under my LC for not stopped for a red light. YOu can called it head under instead on. My little boy and I survived with minor scraped and bruises. They will be classics. It already is headed that way. How many miles on yours? I think by 95, they may have fixed the head gasket issues?

Here's my fleet, I'm from Michigan, but in Texas for work the last 5 months:
1932 Chevy Coupe: Grandpa's old restoration project. Got a stock frame off resto in the late 80's, been driven a few thousand miles since then. Inherited it about a year ago. Needs some mechanical work to get it back on the road (Water pump and throwout bearing).
1990 K5 Blazer: My restomod project, rust free southern truck, currently a great driver. 2.5" lift on 33's, plan to chop the roof off and go full convertible with it. 5.3 / 4l60e swap planned.
1995 Miata M-Edition: Currently my daily driver while I'm in Texas. Not sure the plan when I get back to Michigan though, I may sell it before I head home.
2003 Olds Bravada: Wifes daily driver, nothing special
2004 Grand Prix GT: My DD back in MI. Totally rebuilt from the ground up a couple years ago, Supercharged engine swap, re-geared trans, ect. Rusty MI car though.

2013 VW Jetta Sportwagen 2.5S
2013 Mazda3 i Touring hatch
1994 Miata
1986 BMW 535i
All of them I consider dailies. The Jetta is a lease, I'll probably be trading it in on a Nissan Frontier since I primarly use the Jetta to haul things and I'd like to get a truck bed and the ability to tow a car.
The Mazda3 is my SO's car, but I'm currently driving it to keep miles off the Jetta, and she's been driving the Jetta since she has a shorter commute.
The Miata hibernates from November to March and is my DD and autocross car.
The BMW is a project - I completed a 5-speed swap on it earlier this year. I do drive the BMW to work on days when the roads aren't heavily salted to keep miles off the Jetta. That has amounted to 3,000 miles since mid-November when I finished the swap, and a total of 6,000+ miles since I bought the car in May.
What's sad is the BMW has the highest factory HP rating at 184hp, but the Jetta probably puts out the most currently at 170hp - I'm still waiting to break the 200 hp barrier  That will happen when I get the Frontier, and/or when I build up a motor for the BMW

Moving with lots of cars is a pain. I had 5 cars and a motorcycle when we moved from Portland to Marin county. I sold the motorcycle, the wife drove her car, we shipped one car and I drove 3. It was a pain in the rear.
When we moved from Marin to the San Diego area we were down to 4 cars, and the wife drove the 2 daily drivers, I drove the 2 60s Alfas.
Having just sold the wife's problematic Subaru, we are currently at 4, but looking at adding a city runabout soon, very likely it will be something like the new Jeep Renegade.
Currently:
'93 Miata - DD
'03 Lexus IS300 - Backup family car, currently used mostly by my wife
'67 Alfa GT Jr. - cruiser, emergency backup family car
'69 Alfa GTV - street/track car

What in the blazes of hellfire are you waiting for??
It is a special one. I have known the guy for a long time and had been bugging him about the car for some years. He doesn't drive it and lost interest with other racing programs he's involved in. One is the Baja 500 and some other road racing BS. He was nice enough to say" you really want it?" During a long lunch one day while we were shooting the breeze. I didn't even finish my sandwich and went to grab my checkbook just so he doesn't change his tune after a beer or two later. I gotta take advantage of him when he's drunk. He has it in his shop / storage fill with parts and race cars and more freaking cars. I can't pester him too much about it, but this summer, I will help him with some house cleaning and get the car out. I have the title and its in my name already so I am in no hurry for it.
He built this for himself as his daily driver back. its had something like 23000 miles with a built motor from Andial. So, a little piss ant like me must wait.

I would really like to sell both Tacoma and Liberty and get something that would fill both their shoes in one vehicle. Wouldn't have bought the 10AE this past summer if I had known this, but we found the new place a couple of months after I bought the Miata.
1990 Miata - First Miata, plan to own it until I die
1999 10AE Miata - Bought it from a family friend six months ago, may have to let it go because of the move
2005 Mini Cooper - Bought it new, owned longer than any other car I've had, still love it, hope to keep it for many more years
2007 Forester XT - Winter car, family car, nearing 100k miles, and will need some major work/refreshing done in the near future
2008 Mustang GT - My 4th Mustang in 25 years, hate to see it go, but a friend is buying it in a few months
2013 Subaru BRZ - Coming up on three years of ownership, torn between letting it or the 10AE go, fun car, just not that attached to it

Plan on owning my Miata as long as possible too. That is a gorgeous garage, I definately want one like that when we get our retirement home.
What are the dimensions? I'm guessing 30x40. Nice to have double depth and four to five vehicles across.33'x 34', which only leaves 2' between each of the cars if parked 4 across (the floor tiles are 12" square). Ideally it would be 40' wide, but it was here when we bought the place, so I did the best I could with what I had to work with.

Good to know. So 35x40 would be ideal then, I guess. Although your setup leaves nothing to be desired at all! I'm on the lookout for some good wall art like you have.

How many miles on yours? I think by 95, they may have fixed the head gasket issues?
Thanks man. Mine has about 220k on it. Runs great. I think it will keep going as long as I choose to keep it. I have no problem thinking it can go 500k miles. No head gasket problem that I know of. So I'm guessing it was either fixed by the time the 95 came out or a previous owner addressed it (?)

Which V6? If it's the 3.0, then you have the venerable Vulcan, which doesn't have the famous head gasket problem. It's much less powerful, but very durable in my experience (Taurus and Ranger).

Currently sitting at 4 and will be adding a 5th shortly in late May.
2000 Civic Si:
Bought it brand new back in 1999 and have owned it since. Has some chassis and brake mods along with the suspension. I don't drive it much these days and it is actually stored away in my brother's bunker as we just don't have the room at our current place. I cant see myself ever parting with this car.
http://i58.tinypic.com/2mdqr9v.jpg
2002 Civic Si:
Owned this car for 3 1/2 years or so now and love it. It's my daily driver during the winter and my defacto "pickup truck". It's fun to drive and has great utility. Mods are minimal with only Mugen suspension and Progress rear sway bar.
http://i61.tinypic.com/awdqp3.jpg
1990 Miata:
Bought this in February of last year and it's my daily driver during most of the year. Has a few mods and well...this is a Miata forum so you guys know why I own one.
http://i60.tinypic.com/28im49y.jpg
2007 FJ Cruiser:
The Mrs' car. I don't drive this much at all but it's great in the winter and as a beach buggy. It sits most of the times as the Mrs travels Mon-Thurs every week. I will drive it on snow days and that's about it. It's a rolling blind spot and terrible on gas....but it's paid for and she loves it and has owned it since new. (just realized have almost no pics of her FJ so sorry for the IG pic)
http://i60.tinypic.com/8yrepj.jpg
In May I will be adding something else to the mix. Still undetermined but it will most likely be a first gen CRX Si. In the late fall of this year if all goes as planned I will add a first gen 4-Runner to the mix as a winter daily driver. I'll keep the 2002 Civic Si and split that as a good weather daily driver with the Miata.

We're down to only (4) vehicles since the two kids have grown and taken their cars away. It was pretty rediculous at our house when all six were there, plus a couple of boyfriends' cars too. None were ever THAT special, but all had their moments in the sun. Remaining are: 1985 Subaru BRAT, 1995 Acura Legend, 1999 Lexus RX, and 2007 Mx5 NC PRHT.
I'd like to add a ND to the corral, but we really don't have the space, and we need some beaters for the Wisco winters.

There are a few cars I am always watching for a good one to come along at a reasonable price. Not much desire to own a shoebox Chevy. Some of those I am looking for are in no particular order:
1960 Thunderbird
1950 Oldsmobile 2 door HT
1966 Oldsmobile Toronado
1967 Cadillac Eldorado
Sunbeam Alpine (for a turbo Miata engine swap)
Bugeye Sprite
All of these are cars I've owned and enjoyed in the past.

The CRX is a hoot to drive, I hear. How many miles do you have on it by now?
CRX is showing somewhere around 246K miles and is quite rough around the edges (just about time to patch the back fenders again).
But it also has some nice upgrades (Koni SPSS shocks, GC coilovers, big rear sway bar) and gets to play between the cones occasionally when I put some decent tires on it.

I've had three of these, one big fin and two short fin versions. None of the were powered by a turbo Miata engine, but there's still time to get that one in if a nice donor car came my way.
Back in the late '60s early '70s I had a nice little side business converting Alpines from Lucas generators to GM Delco alternators and sometimes from + earth to - earth.

What happened to that weird old ... Saab? Volvo? That you bought last year?
It was a 1966 Saab 96. I bought it mainly for the experience of overhauling the two stroke, 3 cylinder engine. I never planned to keep it, 44 HP wasn't going to be fun for long.
I found out that the modular crankshaft can only be disassembled/reassembled by three shops in the country and you can't do it yourself without a press and special tooling I lost interest in the project and sold it for a small loss to reclaim the space in my shop. It went to two brothers who are into the two stroke Saab thing so it will get restored to at least driver status.

Greasy,
Lucky. My wife drives all the cars I own including the 930 but she has a bit of trouble of getting out of the steep apron on our driveway. There's a way of getting out of there at a certain angle without scraping up the chin but she don't know how to or don't care to find out is more like the truth. She drives the van all day long, so when she wants to take the top down on the S2000 to have lunch with her friends and do a little shopping, what am I to say, no? I hate it, because I don't like my seat and mirrors moved. It drives me nuts. Yes, OCD. She's a very good and snappy driver. This is the girl I met in college that used to change her own oil and spark plugs. All her dad's doing. It all changed as soon as the officiant read me my rights and on with the cuffs.

Wife wants an Enclave once the Honda wears out (if it ever does), I want to replace the Tahoe with a used quad cab 2500HD, and get either the new lower cost Tesla, a Volt, or a Bolt when they come out, depending on the driving experience.

1. 2007 Nissan Altima (wife's daily driver car)
2. 1994 Miata M Edition - was daughters high school car, she's in college now and says she wants a car with a roof and a back seat, so the Miata will likely be sold to let me get another. Can't maintain my full fleet as it is. Love the fun of having the Miata but its time to enjoy one of my other cars instead.
3. 1991 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo- New motor, rebuilt heads, 13g turbos, boost controller, runs 16lbs of boost, goes very fast when it was driven, but has sat in backyard for almost 7 years now, time to fix it or sell it.
4. 1969 Dodge Charger R/T Special Edition. My first car. Just finishing restoration, its ready for the road, but need to get the stealth out of the way so I can get it out of the second garage out back. Bought in 1978 for 800, invested another 10k or so rebuilding it, and its one of two known to exist, so its time to get it on the road.
5. 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T, 5.7L v8 Hemi, Auto, my daily driver, Detonator Yellow, Tan leather interior (Katzkins put in week after I bought the car, I don't like black leather. Drives great, love it, but it isn't a Charger so it won't be a Project other than a few tasteful mods for local car shows.

My friend is going out of town for a bit - well, out of country actually, and "for a bit" meaning 2-3 years estimated. He asked if I would keep his two cars for him during that time. "ashtray's used car lot"? I actually stored his car for 8 months once in the past and had to put it on my insurance. Not about to add two more to my stable of 4.

One thing I'm wondering is how many cars can you accumulate until you have too many to drive regularly? This is completely subjective but I'm thinking 4 cars is the magic number and after that it gets hard to drive them regularly. My "experiment:"
1. '95 Land Cruiser - daily driver when I need room for passengers and/or in bad weather.
2. '90 Miata - 3/4 of the year daily driver when I don't have passengers, want good gas mileage, and there's no precipitation & weather is above freezing & roads are dry and (mostly) salt free. :D
3. [Not purchased yet] Ranger 4cyl 5spd 2wd for driving in bad weather, on salty roads, for hauling things, for parking in sketchy areas, to reduce # of miles on the LC and save some gas. :)
4. [Not purchased yet] C5 Corvette. Will be my most babied car. No bad weather, no parking in bad areas (or on NYC streets). Car to drive just for the sheer sake of driving.
If there is time to drive another car I'd like to know about it LOL :dunno:

I'd look for a 4wd Ranger - 2wd are notoriously tail happy and easy to get stuck in snow. Sandbags in the bed do help, as do good tires. Just some observations from our family's 2wd hauler. In Phoenix, 2wd is great, but in Flagstaff, where it spends some time, lack of 4wd is a pain several days out of the year.

Although I dont know if you can get a 4cyl 4wd. 3.0 v6 still gets mileage in the 20s, but if you have to get a 4.0 to get 4wd, might not be worth it as mileage will tank.

2002 Lexus ES300 - never breaks, will never die. Plan to put it in my will.
2004 BMW 330xi - always breaks, lives on repairs. Like a difficult wife, it's love/hate.
2008 Miata MX5 - never breaks, will never die. Plan to keep trying to kill it :D .
2014 Chevy Volt - this will be the first of many EVs. I'm loving this car. Will love the next one even more.

2009 BMW 135i, Not stock, easily the fastest car I have ever driven
1990 BMW 325i, upgraded suspension bits, mostly stock engine, lots of fun
2005 GTI 1.8T, Wife's car, 100% stock (3rd mk4 gti 1.8t we have had, and only 1 stock)
2002 F150 FX4, My winter DD. 100% rust free from the southwest. wash it constantly to try and keep it that way for as long as possible.
All vehicles but the F150 are manual trans (yes including the wife's GTI, just like me she will NOT own an automatic car, truck or SUV is ok, but car has to be 3 pedals. I love her haha)

Keith, you're right. Frequently is what I meant. I have trouble driving more than 4 cars frequently.
I wish I could just drive different cars all day but I have other things to do :(
Also, I don't have a garage. So I'm limited in how many I can fit in my driveway, backyard  and on the street.

What mileage do you get in the Ranger? We have the 3.0, wondering how the 4.0 does. (my mom's '04, not the '77 F-100 in my sig. That has a 460!)

2014 Mazda 3s Grand Touring - just bought earlier this month, my DD;
2011 Acura MDX - bought last November, wife's DD;
2002 Tahoe - 179k miles, bought in '05, former DD, now tow vehicle;
2002 Lexus RX300 - bought new in '02, 200k miles, wife's former DD;
1991 Miata - bought in '02 or thereabouts.
And if we're counting non-street legal vehicles, then add a 1984 Honda CRX race car to the list.
We'll probably sell the Lexus soon, it's kind of redundant now.

Until fairly recently I had 5 and have finally cut back to 3. If I get my way it will be back up to 5 soon..
08 Expedition EL- 88k, bought it in 2010 for with 40k miles for a great price. I have 4 boys so I need a big vehicle.
99 Miata Hard S- Bought it in late 2013 with 114k for $1500. Currently has 142k and change. Has a bit of rocker rust but it runs great so who cares? I'll drive it until I get bored and then dump it.
97 Eclipse Turbo- Picked it up in early 98 bone stock and only 5k on the clock. Modded and raced heavily until 2006 when the first motor fragged at 136k. Rebuilt the bottom end, beat on it some more and grenaded it last year after some heavy detonation from a fuel starvation issue under high boost. Just finished swapping in a 6 bolt motor and it should be back on the road for more beatings in the next month or 2.
00 Xterra XE V-6- Bought it in 2002 as a DD/family hauler when I still only had 1 boy and outgrew our Saturn SC2. Great truck and could tow like a champ. Sucked gas like a pig and outgrew its usefulness so I ended up selling it very recently with 137k.
89 Ford Probe- I picked it up for free with intentions of repairing the few minor issues that it had and dumping it quick for a few bucks. It turned out to be such an awesome beater/DD that I kept it. Had something north of 300k when I got it (the odometer had stopped working at 275k), but it ran/drove like a champ and got great mileage so I used it on my daily commute from Va. Beach to NS Norfolk for a few years until I retired.
I needed to free up some driveway space so I put it on CL. Ended up getting $1k for it from a guy around the block. He now uses it for his 80 mile per day commute and says it runs better than some new cars.
I'm currently looking at getting something a bit bigger than the Miata for my nightly commute. I'm not super thrilled with most newer cars, and I've been on the lookout for something along the lines of an older Lexus LS400 or IS300 as well as 04-06 Acura TL's.
I'm about a week out from picking up a cherry 91 Plymouth Laser AWD to feed a bit of my love for DSM's.

Sorry. I've got an unwritten rule (well, it's actually a guideline ;)) that all vehicles must have shelter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/davisinla/27184060973/in/album-72157635373507114/). Five garage spaces, five cars. The Polaris lives in the carport.
Do you keep them all registered/insured/running?
And I've got to ask: Why two Priuses?

I usually insure 4-5 cars only and the others have storage coverage when not in use (if value is above 5k) I couldn't afford to insure them all. Some are stored at my other house, most here, and the pole barn at the cabin. And yes the '69 SS looks like crap with all the stuff around it, but I can't complain about free storage. It's in my Brothers garage in California.(where I moved from) I've taken 7 round trips Mi to Ca and that truck is next to come home. Here's a shot at Bonneville Salt Flats on the way there http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161218/c589fd9befa34de68cebb11770803cd3.jpgThe enclosed car trailers in background has the bikes, bobcat, and one has my MR2 in it. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161218/687c8b45cb9c9c9e8680c7253220d03d.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161218/87ceed8cb15c644eaa1af09566c2018d.jpg

Boy, you guys are living my dream.
We only have 3 cars and one is really my wife's choice. But-- I have a history of buying/trading for about 1+ car a year. I'm at 81 total now. I almost added a real vintage car to my list ('52 MGTD) that I'd been dreaming about but after driving one I did a complete reversal and spent my money for a low mileage used ND. It was on my list since it came out but couldn't pull the trigger on a new one. If I had the space I probably would have about 4 cars at once.

Space is what gets you into trouble!! We bought this 1 acre property to build a big garage and it's been 3 yrs of fighting and waiting. So I bought a lot of trailers for now so everything has its coverage except a few of the ones I use or don't care about. It's actually very tiring trying to keep up maintenance. I lose 1-2 batteries a year because I forget to get them out into the basement before winter temps kill them. Brakes seize up, rotors warp, and even brand new tires last only a few years before checking/cracking occurs. It's a disease. My wife has a lot of work on her hands just having to sell them all if I fall off the earth. My son has no interest in cars period. He dropped off the new TDI and took my AWD BMW for the winter, that's about the only thing he does is change out a car every year. He's had over 23 cars and he's 22. He wanted this car , that car, whatever the cool car was that month at school. All my cars are too old and not cool enough. I bought this car for his first car and he didn't like me harping on him to keep it clean, so I got him a plain Jane civic with crank windows and no radio [emoji12] http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161218/192fa7822c3c190e774dfc1dc905993c.jpg '91 NSX

I don't drink so I thought AA was for something else..lol.
I used to be a auto tech and got in a bike wreck 12 years ago. I wholesaled cars and repaired cars from home, but started keeping cars instead of selling them. My business partner died last year and his family sold the business w/o giving me a dime. So now I'm just semi-retired. I go to Mecum and Barret Jackson via motorhome to keep me busy.

I have less of a problem than I used to. We started this year with 9.5 vehicles in the fleet. I have sold two so we're down to 7.5, which is still too many, but at least it's manageable.
Like NoLid a few posts us, we did a driveway expansion a couple years ago so most vehicles are on concrete rather than dirt.

Love having this pad next to the garage for trailer parking
http://claffie.com/photos/140831/images/140831_19.jpg
So now I can put one fun car in the garage, four more ready to go on the side, the truck on the side of the street (we live on a small dead-end road), and the wife can get the driveway.
http://claffie.com/photos/160930/images/160930_22.jpg
The fleet is now
1971 MGB
1990 Miata
1993 Miata
2005 MSM
2008 MX5
2008 Honda Fit
2014 RAM 1500 crew cab
We also have a 18-foot aluminum trailer and the local autocross club's Ford E350 van. The trailer usually lives on the street behind (and/or hooked to) the truck while the van gets the concrete pad next to the garage. During the off-season the van goes in the backyard and the trailer goes on the pad.

Update!
Our fleet:
1967 Camaro, straight 6, automatic, currently waiting for restoration (It will be awhile; fortunately it doesn't complain!) in my father-in-law's hay barn.
1973 Porsche 914 (runs now, on fuel injection, after an embarrassing amount spent at the local air-cooled expert's place)
1991 Miata, 5-speed, B package (waiting for spring!)
2002 Subaru WRX wagon, 5mt, 240K miles and counting--sold. Knocking around on its second engine after 250K miles.
2004 MPV--totaled, rear-ended by an inattentive driver. Replaced with a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country SWB, "the short bus".
2008 BMW 535xi 6mt - currently making an unusual sound. Gotta call the mechanic on Monday.

18th December 2016, 20:32
My post on 1/8/15 consisted of:
2013 VW Jetta Sportwagen 2.5S
2013 Mazda3 i Touring hatch
1994 Miata
1986 BMW 535i
and their fates...
The Jetta was traded @ 35,000 miles in February 2015 on a leftover 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab 4x4, which I still have. Currently sitting at 26,000 miles.
The Mazda3 is still with us, sitting at 73,000 miles
The Miata was sold in March 2016 @ 140,000 miles, replaced with a 2002 Subaru WRX w/ 100,000 miles. The Subaru was sold the following September @ 108,000 miles.
The BMW was sold in October 2015 @ 210,000 miles.
So, the fleet now stands at:
2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab 4x4
2013 Mazda3 hatch
1997 BMW M3 sedan
1992 VW GTI - long term project, getting a VR6 and suspension transplant out of a 1997 VW Jetta, as well as an interior and body overhaul.

Ha - I did, until I didn't LOL
Turned out to be a '99 not a '98, and an SLS not an STS, but was just too nice to pass up.
Once the lady's husband died some years ago, it sat all by itself in the middle of a 4 car garage - I told her daughter I'd like first shot at the house, too, but doubt I could afford it. They built it in the early 60s in what is now a VERY expensive area.
I got a thick folder with every piece of paper related to the car, all original manuals and every original key-
(first time I've seen a button to pop the fuel door on a remote)

SC T-B 6500 miles? Wow
The SS Impala's getting good money at the big auctions. Wow no miles on yours either [emoji15]
I see you're keeping them all low mileage.. big payout in future
Funny story on Camaro. We got it from Insurance contracted to my friends yard stripped, started looking for parts on CL and found most of the sheet metal(fenders, doors etc) and noticed same color of car....exactly. We bought everything he had (engine already sold, 350) and contacted the police (my friends a Boy Scout) . The seller was the owner that claimed it got stolen and got paid off from Farm Bureau insurance. He got arrested and my parts got confiscated ( I didn't know they were going to do that) I had to wait almost 8 months to get parts back and the money! I ended up putting a 454 BB out of a built tractor pull tractor and a Tremic 6 speed trans in it. Tubular control arms and ruined it by lowering too much. Fun project, got offered way too much and sold it. My rule is everything has a price

Every car/ nut bike nut friend that has ever been at the hangar hates to leave.
Heated (floor and air) flat screen, tunes, refrig....If I ever set up a septic system I could spend weekends there.
The bird was acquired 6 years ago from the original (seventy something YO) owner.
Driven just two summers only and then stored with a, 'I just don't have time to drive it' mindset became 20 years of sitting in a windowless dry garage, it was a fun 'get it back on its feet project'
Drives flawless......kind of fast but nothing near like whats out there today.

Co owned a Piper Warrior II with my dad some years back. He started losing his vision (macular degeneration) and grounded himself...I wasn't using it enough to justify the expense, so, no, not anymore.
I fly enough just to keep my hours up to date.
I aquired this hangar specifically for my car hobby with a thought of maybe getting a aircraft geared around sport avaiation......something small that I can perform the service on.
That and the love of being around aircraft and their owners......A combination that I am comfortable around.
Add to this, the security of an airport and piece of mind that comes from steel buildings (fire) works well for me.

Yeah, up until three weeks ago we were snow free this side of the lake.
Got about 7 accumulated inches now.
I also have the R/C disease....fixed wing stuff, typically 60 inch wingspan.
I am really caught up in the electrics nowadays.......clean, quiet, reliable.
No cameras though.
Track me down if you are visiting the family.

I LOVE them IS300[emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]I still want one. Never had one of them.
I really enjoyed that car too, it was just too small as our long-distance family car. The kids were complaining too much. I have learned to enjoy the GX for what it is - it is super-comfortable, big enough and off road - you just point it at something and it will get over it, no worries.

We just went thru a 800 mile move and it took 3 trips to move everything. The Equinox moved us and I flew back.
Followed by a Penske truck and trailer towing the Miata, all four wheels on the trailer. Unloaded it and flew back again.
Lastly, the Oldsmobile pulling the 4 by 8 box trailer with the lawn tractor and the garage stuff (fluids mainly) that I didn't want on the trucks.

I was just going to ask if you want to sell the CRX. Love them cars. Had many. Hard to find them in this neck of the woods! Why sell?
It was starting to get ratty and develop mechanical needs that I wasn't too thrilled with having to tackle. The rear fenders had already been patched once and were on their way to needing patching again. It was full of oil leaks and needed a complete going-through. It rode rough which made it for a less than ideal street car (even without considering every punk in a primered Civic wanting to race at every traffic light). I wanted to make it a more serious autocross car but the wife never really liked driving it compared to the Miata, so it would have been an uphill battle.
I made a Facebook post last spring hinting at my thinking of selling it, and someone immediately contacted me about buying it. He's a younger guy, works at a BMW dealer body shop, has a Miata, and a fellow autocrosser. I threw a price at him and he quickly produced cash, so it was gone. I still see it from time to time and some of me regrets letting it go since I'm sure I'll never have another one, but it's in the hands of someone who can give it the time and effort it needs and it'll be better off with him than with me.
It was fun while I had it.

This has been a fantastic car. Purchased at auction by dealer friend in 2006 with 134k miles on it for $5k. Now, ten plus years later, it has 233k miles on it and is still probably worth close to $3k.

Those are actually 2011 Nissan GTR wheels; 20" staggered.
For the MR2... it took a bit of work.

I sure wouldn't mind 365hp, but I went the opposite direction. The only things on mine that aren't original are the tires (OEM Yokohamas were no longer available) and the battery.

Yup, '93. I got it in '95 with about 10,000 miles on it IIRC - it's now got 59,000. Since I've owned it, it's only seen rain once (which convinced me it would never see rain again ;)).

You guys are so lucky. I wish I could have a bunch of cars. Michigan has the highest insurance rates in the country, by a large margin. I ended up downsizing, because each car is about $120 per month to insure, despite my spotless record. And these prices are for old, non-financed cars. I know people paying $220 per month for financed cars. Paying $500+ every six months for cars that don't get used often just doesn't fit in my budget. CURSE MICHIGAN CAR INSURANCE LAWS.
