What Laws Are There For Teen Labor? 👩‍⚖️

Jobs for Teens - Get Hired at 14! (7)

It is crucial that teen labor is regulated by the government in order to avoid exploitation. You can read the Fair Labor Standards Act in its entirety, but since it’s pretty technical and boring to read (don’t tell anyone I said that 🤣), I will pull the most relevant points below.

Other than workplaces being obligated to pay teens federal minimum wage, the most important thing is that teens cannot work during school hours, plus they can’t work:

  • more than 3 hours on a school day, including Fridays.
  • over 18 hours per week when school is in session.
  • more than 8 hours per day when school is not in session
  • more than 40 hours per week when school is not in session.
  • before 7 AM or after 7 PM on any day, except June 1st through Labor Day, when night-time work hours are extended to 9 PM.

While this seems like too many restrictions, it actually works out pretty well because jobs that teens can do are usually well adjusted to teen schedules, plus there are a lot of seasonal jobs that teens can do over summer and winter breaks.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some states require teens to get work permits before starting their first job. You can check if that’s your state’s requirement at the Department of Labor directly, or you can ask you school’s guidance office.
